FARMINGTON – SAD 9 directors voted unanimously Tuesday not to readmit a student who was expelled from the middle school the last school year.
The student was expelled for disciplinary reasons and failed to comply with the board’s stipulations outlined then for readmittance, Superintendent Michael Cormier said after the directors’ meeting.
In other business, the board voted to change the graduation date from the afternoon Sunday, June 12, to the evening of Saturday, June 11.
Officers of the Class of 2005 requested the change to accommodate students having relatives traveling to the commencement and to allow the custodians not to have to report to work so early for an afternoon graduation, according to a letter officers sent to Cormier.
The board took no action on setting up a subcommittee to work with administrators as the budget for 2005-2006 is put together and then report to the full board on the budget proposal.
Chairman Greg Webber of New Sharon said he was not in favor of such a committee.
“I think it lends itself for the board to get lazy,” Webber said. “I think our process has really worked well.”
The budget is presented to a full board, he said, which allows everybody to hear and discuss budget issues.
Director Charisse Keach of Chesterville asked if board members interested in going through the process could attend. Cormier said it is a very tedious process.
“It’s emotional,” Cormier said. “It’s very tough.”
Director Neil Stinneford of Weld said he considered it micro-managing and wasn’t in favor of it.
Mark Prentiss, a director from Industry, said it could be considered an informational meeting for newer members.
Cormier said that maybe once the draft budget is presented to the board, if individual board members had questions they could come to him for help.
Webber said he had no problem if Cormier worked with individuals on the budget, but he didn’t want to create a situation where four or five people meet at one time with the superintendent.
The consensus of the majority of the board was to work through the budget process, then, if someone needed help, they could meet with Cormier.
The board opted to keep the budget process the same as last year and directed directors to ask selectmen in their towns if they would like a budget presentation in their town.
Last school year, the board attempted to visit every municipality before completion of the budget.
