LEWISTON – One lucky local will be the first in line Saturday to see the Red Sox World Series trophy at the Colisee.
City officials decided on Wednesday to randomly select a resident for the first-in-line spot, said City Administrator Jim Bennett. Mayor Lionel Guay will select one name from a list of registered Lewiston voters and registered car owners Thursday. The winner and one guest will get to go to the front of the line when the trophy visits Lewiston.
“We thought about using the property tax list, but not everybody owns property,” Bennett said. “That would have kept 12,000 to 13,000 people out of the running.”
The winner should find out some time Thursday or Friday, Bennett said.
Red Sox owners agreed Monday to bring the trophy through the Twin Cities. It will be on display from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Colisee, before heading off to Telstar Regional High School in Bethel. The trophy wraps up its tour of central and western Maine at the Phoenix House and Well in Newry from 7:30 to 10 p.m.
In Lewiston, Bennett said, the city is gearing up for a massive crowd.
“What we don’t want is people standing outside in a long line, and then not getting to see the trophy,” Bennett said. The city plans to set up digital cameras to capture people visiting with the trophy. They will be able to download pictures off the Web, Bennett said.
“If we just let everyone take their own pictures, it really slows down the process,” he said. Only 360 people would get to see the trophy and take a picture if they did it that way.
“We only have it for 90 minutes, so we’re doing what we can to let as many people as possible have a chance to see it.”
