AUBURN – Lewiston coach Tim Smith doesn’t like all of the extra time his team has given itself to refine its short-handed defense, but he doesn’t mind the results.

The Blue Devils blanked host Edward Little on eight power play opportunities and goalie Brian Nason posted his second shutout in as many nights as Lewiston won the 10th Annual Gipper’s Holiday Classic with a 2-0 victory Saturday night.

“Wednesday night (in a 4-3 Lewiston win), they beat us down low all night long,” said Lewiston coach Tim Smith. “We went over it in practice on Thursday and I felt like we contained them a little bit better.”

“We had a hard time breaking out of our zone on the power play and we weren’t moving the puck quickly once we got it down low,” said EL coach Jamie Belleau. “Our strength is getting the puck in deep and establishing our forecheck and we had a hard time doing that.”

Travis Lebrun and Justin Nadeau tallied the Lewiston goals. Nason stopped 20 shots, as he did in Friday night’s 2-0 win over Brunswick.

EL outshot Lewiston, 20-19.

“We didn’t execute on the power play, and certainly that changes the whole dynamics of the game,” said Belleau. “There’s no excuse. Lewiston killed the power plays. They did a good job. As a group, we have to learn that if we don’t all come ready to play, we’re an average team. When we all show up ready to play for three periods we’re a very good team, and tonight, our average team showed up.”

“We’re happy that Lebrun got that goal tonight,” Smith said. “He flies around the ice. He had a chance to play with some different guys tonight and he capitalized on a great opportunity.”

Brunswick beat Cony in the consolation game, 7-1.
