PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Allen Iverson surpassed 50 points for the second consecutive game but fouled out with 4.5 seconds left, putting Mehmet Okur on the line for the winning free throws in Utah’s 103-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.
Iverson followed up his 54-point game in Milwaukee with 51 this time, becoming the first Sixers player to score 50 in back-to-back games and the first Philadelphia player to accomplish the feat since Wilt Chamberlain for the Philadelphia Warriors in 1962.
The last NBA player to score 50 points in consecutive games was Antawn Jamison in December 2000 with the Golden State Warriors.
Iverson scored 21 in the third quarter to help the Sixers overcome a 16-point halftime deficit, only to watch the comeback fall short from the bench. After Okur hit his foul shots, a running layup attempt by Willie Green clanged off the back of the rim, and the Jazz snapped a seven-game road losing streak and a three-game skid overall.
Suns 107, Nuggets 105
DENVER – Amare Stoudemire had 32 points and nine rebounds, and Quentin Richardson tipped in a shot at the buzzer to help the Phoenix Suns extend their winning streak to nine games with a 107-105 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.
Richardson finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, and Steve Nash added 15 points and 10 assists to give Phoenix its second nine-game winning streak this season. The Suns have won 18 of 19 and eight straight on the road, one short of the team record.
Rockets 114, Raptors 102
HOUSTON – Yao Ming scored a season-high 40 points and Tracy McGrady added 34 points and 12 rebounds, leading the Houston Rockets to a 114-102 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.
The Rockets have won nine of 10 home games against the Raptors, whose only win in Houston was nearly five years ago.
The point-total was a season high for the Rockets, who also hit a season-best 51.9 percent of their shots from the field (41-of-79).
Chris Bosh had 16 points to lead seven Raptors in double figures. Toronto has lost nine of its last 11 games.
Bulls 92, Trail Blazers 87
CHICAGO – Ben Gordon scored 23 points with Michael Jordan in attendance, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Portland Trail Blazers 92-87 on Monday night for their fourth consecutive victory.
Eddy Curry added 18 points and Kirk Hinrich 17 for Chicago, which has won four straight for the first time since Jordan’s 1998 championship team won 13 in a row.
The Bulls are 8-6 since their 0-9 start.
Jordan received a loud standing ovation when he appeared on the jumbotron before the start of the fourth quarter, and the Bulls used the energy to their advantage.
Gordon hit a jumper to put Chicago up 80-74 with 7:56 left, then hit Curry with a nice pass to increase the lead to eight. The Blazers countered with a 9-2 run, and Zach Randolph had back-to-back baskets to cut it to 84-83 with 3:44 left.
Hinrich followed with a pair of free throws and Gordon hit a 3 to make it 89-83 with 2:55 to go. Theo Ratliff missed a wide-open jumper for the Blazers with 1:20 left that would have cut the lead to two, and Curry scored to give Chicago a 91-85 lead with 1:04 left.
Randolph finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds, and Darius Miles had 13 points and 13 rebounds despite shooting 3-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Bulls forward Antonio Davis played despite a bruised jaw. He left Saturday’s game against the Pacers in the third quarter after he was hit in the side of the head as he was driving to the basket. Davis also sustained a mild concussion. Davis finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blazers closed out the first half by outscoring Chicago 13-4 to take a 50-49 lead at halftime. Miles made a driving layup as time expired in the second quarter. Damon Stoudamire scored 16 points in the first half, all in the second quarter. He was 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the half.
Gordon led Chicago with 12 points in the half and Hinrich added 10. Chicago led by 13 early in the second quarter.
Stoudamire finished with 22 points and was 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Notes: Portland was without Shareef-Abdur Rahim (right elbow) for the fourth straight game. … Nick Van Exel added 14 points for the Blazers.
