The state built a bridge across the river between Livermore and Livermore Falls with two sidewalks for people who have to walk. Each town has the responsibility of clearing these sidewalks when we have a snowstorm.

The town of Livermore has faithfully had its half cleared on one side of the bridge after every storm. However, Livermore Falls has not been faithful in clearing its half, leaving a mess of frozen slush pockmarked with footprints that make it very difficult and dangerous to walk on.

I have seen one person walk across there with a cane on that frozen ice and have large trucks passing him within two feet. One slip could put anyone underneath the wheels.

The sidewalks are used by people who have no transportation, by children and older people walking for their health and other reasons. In the past few years, I have complained to the town and the state highway departments. As of right now, it is almost impossible to walk without having to walk in the road, with almost a continuous line of vehicles crossing the bridge.

In town, vehicles, including vendors, often park right on the sidewalks, again forcing pedestrians to walk in the road or in the ditch. In Jay, sidewalks are quite often left full of ice, making it very slippery when new snow falls. Sidewalks should be kept safe and be for pedestrians only. I’ve been walking for 15 years along that road.
