Call Maine Sen. Susan Collins perfect. The state’s junior Republican senator is ending 2004 with another perfect voting record in Congress’ upper chamber.
Collins has extended the streak of consecutive roll call votes she’s showed up for to 2,592. That means she’s been present for every roll call vote held in the Senate since she was sworn into office in January 1997.
“I take very seriously the charge that has been granted to me by the people of Maine, to represent their interests and their voice in the U.S. Senate,” Collins said in a press release. “It is my honor to do so,” she added.
Collins said she was inspired to public service in part by the career of the late Sen. Margaret Chase Smith.
Smith went for 13 years without missing a vote. When she finally did, it was because she was hospitalized for surgery.
Smith’s consecutive tally: 2,941 votes.
