PHILLIPS – A 76-year-old Rangeley man remained in critical condition Monday at a Lewiston hospital.

George Adams was driving north on Route 4 on Thursday when his Dodge Caravan apparently drifted over the center line and into oncoming traffic.

A pickup truck driver was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, police said. Both the driver of that vehicle and his passenger had minor injuries, police said.

Adams suffered a broken leg, cuts and possible internal injuries and was trapped in his vehicle for more than 30 minutes after the 3:40 p.m. accident was reported.

The Farmington Fire Rescue Department used its extrication tools to free Adams.

Chief Terry Bell said it took firefighters about 25 minutes to get to the Phillips scene, and he estimated it took another 15 to 20 minutes to free him from his vehicle.

Adams was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he remained Monday morning.
