AUBURN – A caller reporting a smell of smoke in the Auburn Mall off Center Street led to a response by several city firefighting units about 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Platoon Chief Bruce Goddard said the smoke was confined in the “As Seen On TV” store near JC Penney’s.

Firefighters quickly determined the smoke was caused by a burnt bearing on a rooftop heating unit, Goddard said.

The unit was shut down for the day and repairs ordered, he said.
