LEWISTON – A local man remained hospitalized Monday, three days after he was mauled by a dog inside an Oak Street apartment.
A police sergeant and an animal control officer called the attack on 56-year-old Eddie Hudson Sr. among the worst incidents of dog bite they had ever seen.
Investigators said Hudson’s biceps, or upper arm muscle, was almost completely torn off in the New Year’s Eve attack at 62 Oak St.
Hudson underwent surgery at Central Maine Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
Police said Hudson and a group of people were celebrating the holiday in apartment there when a pit bull owned by one of the men lunged at Hudson.
“The log latched onto his arm and pretty much ripped it apart,” said Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout. “I’ve never seen a bite quite that bad.”
Hudson was taken to Central Maine Medical Center, where he has remained since. Police were called to the scene and Strout began an investigation.
The owner of the pit bull, 53-year-old Stephen Lyons, coaxed the dog into a kennel and Strout removed the animal from the apartment. Strout said there are no indications the dog was rabid, but the animal will be kept under observation for 10 days.
Strout said Lyons has tentatively agreed to turn the dog over to city officials to be euthanized once the quarantine period is over.
