AUBURN – A Bates College student charged with selling marijuana from his dorm room pleaded guilty Thursday and was sentenced to three days in jail.
Jonathan Ivers, 21, will get out of Androscoggin County Jail just in time to begin the spring semester at Bates.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency began investigating Ivers about a year ago after college officials contacted police and told them about their suspicion that he was dealing drugs on the campus.
Drug agents raided his room in John Bertram Hall on Feb. 26, 2003.
According to Officer Roland Godbout, the agents confiscated 10 ounces of marijuana, a scale and an undisclosed amount of money.
Ivers was not arrested at the time. Drug agents handed the case to the district attorney’s office, and Ivers was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury.
He was initially charged with aggravated trafficking in scheduled drugs because his dormitory was located within 1,000 feet of Lewiston Middle School.
As part of a plea agreement reached with the district attorney’s office, the charge was dropped to simple trafficking.
In addition to three days in jail, Ivers will serve one year of probation, pay $2,000 in fines and complete 100 hours of community service.
“If you are back in court on another drug charge, you won’t get a three-day sentence,” Justice Nancy Mills warned Ivers Thursday.
Ivers was temporarily suspended from Bates after he was charged. His lawyer told Mills that he has undergone counseling over the past year and he plans to begin classes Monday.
