County commission: Poland needs deputies

Sheriff’s Capt. Raymond Lafrance received approval to advertise in-house, and outside if necessary, for a patrol deputy for Poland.

Two positions in Poland are open and there are no qualified applicants interested in the position of sergeant. Lafrance said the department could place two deputies in Poland and review the officers for possible promotion to sergeant in one or two years. He said a similar situation occurred in 1988.

In other business, the commission re-elected Elmer Berry to a second one-year term as chairman. Commissioner Constance Cote nominated Berry and commended him for his performance as chairman the past year.

Lisbon: Price of plant upgrade goes up

Selectmen have decided to hold off on a plan to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant grit and rag removal system.

A $350,000 bond issue was approved a year ago, but since that time the cost has increased, due to a redesign recommended by a spokesman of the firm that operates the plant, Earth Tech.

Selectmen were told that if it was going to be done, that it should be done the right way.

The new design is expected to cost up to $575,000, and will have to be approved by voters at town meeting in May.
