HANOVER, N.H. – Maine collegiate and high school athletes scored heavily in the one-mile racewalk at the 36th Dartmouth Relays at Leverone Field House on Sunday.

In the women’s race, Joanne Dow, U.S. national 20K champion representing Adidas, walked a blistering six minutes and 46.78 mile to break Olympian Teresa Vaill’s 1990 meet record of 6:50.40.

Two Canadian walkers, Rachel Lavallee, Peterborough, TC, and Marina Crivello, Montreal Olympique, captured second and third place respectively with times of 7:06.71 and 7:09.89. Anne Favolise (racing unattached), of Columbia, Maine, captured fourth place with a respectable time of 7:17. C.W. Post freshman and USA Junior female walker of the year for 2004, Maria Michta, took fifth place at 7:49.91, with Boothbay’s Lauren Forgues closing rapidly for sixth place at 8:01.54.

The next four finishers were Mt. Blue’s Carly Lochala (8:14.05), University of Maine at Farmington’s Kate Dickinson (8:24.15), Shead’s Helen Pottle (8:28.91), and Mt. Blue’s Jessie Smith (8:29.30).

In the men’s race, New Jersey’s Zachary Pollinger (6:15.33), USA Junior male walker of the year for 2004, walking unattached, pulled ahead of Athletics East’s Patrick Collier (6:16.59) to win a close and exciting race. High school senior Michael Kazmierczak (7:09.25), Holy Trinity, N.Y., captured third place. He was followed by four Maine walkers led by Hall-Dale junior Padric Gleason (8:14.87), Boothbay Regional Elementary’s outstanding seventh-grade racewalker Matthew Forgues (8:32.60), Scarborough sophomore Taylor Burns (8:54.34), and Lisbon senior Ken Mcoy (9:16.86) .

The next big race for Maine racewalkers will be the 3,000-meter racewalk at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational Track and Field Meet to be held at Harvard University on Sunday, Jan. 23.
