The Dec. 27 Sun Journal editorial, “A gift to big timber,” equates “logging” of trees with anti-environmental Bush policies. Not surprising to me. A well known, highly regarded forester, Fred Huntress of Poland, took the editorial to task. Well done, Fred!

Joyce White of Stoneham took Huntress to the woodshed saying Huntress is wrong to defend the Bush forest management policies. I am a retired forester, having served federal, state and local programs. Don’t waste your energy, folks. Sure, Kerry won Maine, but Bush is president. In the meantime, we will all continue to live in wood houses, that is until forests aren’t available for lumber.

The national forests’ biggest problem is litigation and specifically, taxpayer dollars fighting for common sense. Maine’s forest trees will be utilized by someone or something, either mankind, forest insects and diseases, fire or wind.

Maine’s biggest problem locally is not how forests are managed, but rather the subdivision of forests for house lots.
