BRUNSWICK – Irene V. Dow, of Thornton Hall, Brunswick, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 13, at her home.

Born in Winthrop April 26, 1910, the daughter of Cleophas and Henrietta Hill Loon, she graduated from Winthrop High School in 1928 and Farmington Normal School in 1930.

After graduation, she taught the second grade in the Winthrop School System from 1930 to 1940. She belonged to the National Retired Teachers Association and the Maine Retired Teachers Association.

She married Charles Dow of Jay on Sept. 20, 1940 and they lived in Livermore Falls and Jay from 1940 to 1980, when they left their home to move to Winthrop and care for her sister and husband. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother throughout her life.

In 1999, she and her husband moved to Topsham and then to Brunswick in 2000.

She attended St. Charles Borromeo Church and was a former member of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and St. Frances Xavier Church in Winthrop.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Charles; two daughters, Diane Deane and her husband, James, of Holden, Mass., and Suzanne Austin and her husband, Michael, of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Alan Deane and his wife, Jennifer, Andrea Young and her husband Michael, both from Massachusetts, and Adam Austin and his wife, Megan, of Harpswell; four great-grandchildren; a niece, Irene and her husband, Ian Smith, of Pennsylvania; and a nephew, Alton and his wife, Kay Barcelou, of California.
