LEWISTON – City leaders are willing to part with the Colisee’s good name, but it’s going to cost a willing company $75,000 per year.
The city officially put the naming rights for the Colisee on the table Friday, issuing a request for proposals to local firms.
“Some companies have already approached us, to look into it,” said Colisee board President Normand Rousseau. “But we wanted to wait until we had finished the work on the building. It gives them a better idea of what they’re getting.”
Rousseau said the Colisee board will consider any company willing to submit a proposal – local, national or international.
Companies need to submit proposals by April 1. The Colisee’s board of directors will review proposals through May 31. A decision is due by June 10.
The city wants a company to commit to the Colisee for at least 10 years, for a minimum of $75,000 each year.
In exchange, the company’s name will become part of the Colisee’s formal name. The company will get to include its name in all Colisee signs, marketing, press releases and promotional items like T-shirts.
The company will also get special use of the facility, including events in the VIP Room, regular complimentary passes to events and Lewiston Maineiacs games and the ability to use the facility to display products and company information.
“It think that’s a very fair price, when you consider what comes with it,” Rousseau said. “Every show, every activity, that name will be a part of. Brochures, advertising, their name will be all over everything. And when you consider how many people go through there, we’re actually hoping we can get even more.”
By comparison, the FleetCenter in Boston, where the Celtics and Bruins play, has a 15-year contract on naming rights that pays the center a total of $30 million.
The city officially assumed ownership of the former Central Maine Civic Center a year ago, agreeing to take on $4.7 million in debt and management of the center. That includes day-to-day operations and $2 million in repairs.
