ATHOL, Mass. (AP) – An elderly woman pulled from a fire died during the weekend in Athol Memorial Hospital.

Irene Craver, 76, died early Sunday, two days after being pulled from her burning building.

The fire began in the eight-unit building at 3 a.m. Friday and later reignited, shutting down a 250-yard section of Main Street as firefighters from Athol, Orange and Phillipston fought the blaze for most of the day.

When firefighters arrived, they found tenants outside screaming and Craver trapped inside one of the first-floor apartments, Athol Fire Chief James Wright said.

A neighbor, Peter Leonard, pulled Craver, who was confined to a wheelchair, to his apartment next door, but he was unable to carry the woman outside to safety.

Craver’s apartment was fully engulfed in flames and Leonard’s was full of smoke when firefighters arrived, Wright said.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation.

In a separate fire in Athol on Friday, a man’s 27 cats were killed when his mattress ignited. The man had only minor injuries. That fire is also under investigation.
