BETHEL – Let it be known that the Dirigo girls’ basketball team is starting to play with a greater degree of inspiration, so the rest of the Mountain Valley Conference better take notice.

Senior Alexa Kaubris scored a game-high 15 points and had seven assists as Dirigo remained undefeated with a convincing 66-33 victory over Telstar on Monday.

The Rebels proved to be as cold as the chilly temperatures outside, shooting 27 percent from the floor and committing 23 turnovers. A key was a failure to match the intensity level deployed by Dirigo throughout the game.

Kaubris, who scored her 1,000th-career point Saturday, keyed a 13-3 run in the second quarter.

The Cougars put the game on ice, by building a 26-11 lead.

“We felt that there was a mismatch in the low post,” Dirigo coach Gavin Kane said. “We wanted to get the ball inside to Michelle Holmquist (13 points), Holly Knight (12 points) and Shannon Daley (nine rebounds). We’ve been a little inconsistent, so our goal is to play 32 minutes of basketball.”

Dirigo (11-0) led 20-9 on a Holmquist basket with 4:48 left in the second quarter.

Telstar (7-3) never recovered as standouts Bailey Davis and Abby Wentworth scored nine and seven points, respectively. Kelsey Dole scored eight and Liz Rosenberg added seven points.

“We tried to mix things up,” Telstar assistant coach Vernon Davis said.

“We used a zone defense and then went man-to-man. We ran a motion offense and tried to be patient.”

Dirigo shot 47 percent from the floor and made 14 of 20 free throws. The Cougars scored nine of the first 10 points in the game.

“This was one of our better efforts this season,” Kane said. “Our focus since Christmas has been to play with more energy.”
