NORTH NEW PORTLAND – Roland Pease, 89, of North New Portland, died early Monday morning, Jan. 17, at his home.
He was born, July 10, 1915, in New Portland, a son of Charles A. and Julia (Dyer) Pease. He attended New Portland schools, graduating from Central High School in East New Portland in 1935.
On June 19, 1938, he married his beloved wife of 65 years, Ethel Cobb. She died March 21, 2004.
He served in the United States Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for his efforts during the Battle of the Bulge.
Roland worked at various things throughout his life including, plowing the roads in New Portland during the winter, working in the woods, construction, and also the Winters Mill in Kingfield. He also worked in the Civil Conservation Corps at the end of the Depression, before enlisting in the United States Army.
He was a member of the Coffin-Hewey-Safford American Legion Post in North New Portland, and he enjoyed camping with his wife throughout the state very much, as well as, gardening and spending time with his family.
He is survived by a son, Peter Pease and his wife, Arvilla, of Stratton; a daughter, Sally Humbert and her husband, Gordon, of Harrisburg, Pa.; five grandchildren, Greg Pease, Lisa Gallant, Steven Pease, Hugh Humbert and Jennifer Miller; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Clyde, Charles, and Ray Pease; and one sister, Jennie Wing.
