RUMFORD – A discussion on the town’s development goals and an update on plans for the Abbott Farm Plaza top the agenda for the Rumford selectmen’s meeting on Thursday.

The regular, twice-monthly meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Municipal Building. Town Manager Steve Eldridge said a list of items he has compiled will be reviewed. It includes a look at the goals of the town’s 1998 Comprehensive Plan and a request by the River Valley Growth Council to look into specific ways each member town would like to develop.

He said comments will be taken from townspeople. Whether a second meeting will be scheduled to discuss Rumford’s development goals depends on interest by the residents, he said.

Eldridge also expects to update the board on whether businessman Peter Hatzis has met the requirements to close the deal on the purchase of Abbott Farm Plaza. He said a second Massachusetts firm has also shown interest in buying the property. Hatzis has until Jan. 19 to guarantee at least two anchor businesses for the shopping center.

In a related matter, Eldridge said the board plans to meet in a closed session to discuss Hatzis’ contract and its possible restructuring. He said he expects Hatzis to resubmit a proposal if contract requirements aren’t met.

Also on the agenda are plans to upgrade the Town Office’s telephone and computer systems, a discussion of 24-hour parking on the so-called island section of town and an update on legislation that would change how costs for Oxford County Sheriff’s Department coverage are assessed.
