HART’S LOCATION, N.H. (AP) – An ice climber survived a fall from Frankenstein Cliff in Crawford Notch over the weekend after hitting his head and shattering his helmet.

Gerald Prutsman, 53, of Stewartstown was ice-climbing with a friend Saturday afternoon when he lost his footing and fell about 30 feet, then slid another 10 feet head first before he hit an obstacle and was knocked unconscious.

Fish and Game officers said his helmet probably saved his life. Rescuers carried him out on a stretcher about an hour after the fall. He was treated at the Memorial Hospital in North Conway and released.
