The decision of the 19 members of the Androscoggin County delegation to work together for the good of all citizens in the county is the most encouraging political development I’ve seen in years. Under the able leadership of Rep. Sonya Sampson, the delegation will serve as an inspiration to the rest of the Maine Legislature.

We are all dismayed by the bitter partisan wrangling that has characterized national and state politics for the last 40 years. No good comes from that. Congratulations to all members of the delegation for having the courage and farsightedness to take such a positive step. Of course, there will be differences of opinion. In the end, the delegation should be able to optimize political alternatives to do the greatest good for the largest number of citizens in our area.

I’d suggest the following simple principles and guidelines for their consideration:

• Have good will toward one another. Trust each other.

• Be open and aboveboard in all interactions with one another.

• Rely on facts and data to reach the best decisions, not on, for example, politicized environmental “science.”

• Learn how to reach true consensus on issues and support those consensus agreements privately and publicly.

• Don’t demonize those who disagree with positions.

• Keep lines of communications with constituents open.

• Be ready to explain and defend decisions.
