Not only am I old, but old-fashioned, “square,” opinionated and very conservative, too. I listen attentively to our young people – after all they will be the leaders of tomorrow. Where on Earth did they get the idea that you had to start out in adult life with a brand-new car, home, furniture, computer, sound system and every luxury there is?

If you offer some of them furniture or an appliance that is used, they become offended. When our generation started our adult journey, few had new stuff. Our grandparents, uncles, aunts and parents gave us things for our new homes, and we appreciated them, especially because they were from the people we loved.

Another thing I take issue with is the terrible language that many young people use. It only causes them to appear rude and vulgar. Smoking, drinking and drugging are other issues we need to address much more severely than we do. A slap on the wrist serves no good in most cases.

People need to have a sense of pride in family and in themselves, also respect for their elders, family, teachers and others. Too many people today have no respect for themselves, let alone anyone else.

With respect, pride and a good work ethic, and honesty, we can go a long way toward correcting many of the problems of our times.

God put us here to help others – that, rather than the attitude of self above others – makes all the difference.
