Sun Journal staff misquoted Rev. Mendez in the article “Speaker: Nation forgets the real King.” (Jan. 18)

The reverend did not say “To forget King is to move from Let Freedom Ring’ to blame, blame, blame.” He said, “To forget King is to move from Let Freedom Ring’ to bling, bling, bling.” Bling-bling refers to expensive, grandiose jewelry often associated with the hip-hop music scene.

Rev. Mendez is telling us that, if we neglect the latter half of King’s legacy, King’s concern with freedom will be undermined by the materialism and greed King spoke out against in the final years of his life.
