LEWISTON – A fire victim who went to jail Saturday night after attempting to save his dog now faces two charges.

When fire damaged an apartment building at 612 Sabattus St., Dean Libby and Monique Giguere, who lived in the second-floor apartment, attempted to re-enter the building to save the Shar-Pei puppy, according to police. Libby struggled with officers and was taken into custody.

Lewiston police reported the arrest of Libby, 32, on charges of failure to follow emergency directions of an officer and obstructing government administration. He bailed out of the Androscoggin County Jail later Saturday.

“He was impeding the ability of the officers to accomplish their job, which was the cause of the arrest,” said Lt. Mark Watson.

Lewiston Police Sgt. Danny LaChance was the first of emergency personnel to arrive at the scene. He rescued two cats when he entered the building to make sure there were no people still inside.

Attempts to reach Lewiston Fire Inspector-Investigator Paul Ouellette were unsuccessful Sunday night. Information on the cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not available. It was also not known how many people were homeless following the fire. No injuries were reported.
