LEWISTON – Beverly Jones Matthews, 73, a former resident of East Bates Street, Auburn, died early Monday Jan. 24, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, following a long illness.

She was born in Auburn on Aug. 16, 1931 the daughter of Raymond H. and Doris A. (Shaw) Jones.

She was educated in the grammar schools of Farmington and Livermore Falls, and was a 1949 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. She also attended and graduated from the Wilson School in Boston, earning a certificate in medical laboratory and X-ray technique.

On March 26, 1955 she married Clayton L. Matthews Sr., in Livermore Falls. He died Jan. 18, 1988. Though working for a time in her chosen field, she was a homemaker for most of her life. She enjoyed several interests including, reading, playing cards, puzzles, needle point, and flower gardening. She loved observing birds, and all of nature, and going to the ocean; especially Bailey’s Island. Her most important interests were her children and grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, and was very devoted to. She drew great enjoyment in spending time with her entire extended family.

Survivors include three sons, Clayton L. Matthews Jr., and his wife, Debra-Ann, of Turner, Christopher J. Matthews and his wife, Louise, of Poland, and Andrew S. Matthews and his wife, Cyndi, of Auburn; four grandchildren, Clayton L. Matthews III, of Bangor, Kimberly A. Matthews of Lewiston, Stephanie L. Matthews of Poland, and Kevin C. Matthews of Poland; three brothers, Brent C. Jones and his wife, Joan, of Livermore Falls, Brian R. Jones and his wife, Colleen, of Spring Valley, Calif., and Bruce G. Jones of Bridgton; and her stepmother, Irene Jones of Livermore Falls.

She was predeceased by a sister, Thelma M. Garrow; and a brother Richard S. Jones.
