LEWISTON – Carl B. “Bart” Swanton Jr., 77, born in Gorham, died Jan. 23, following a short illness.

A naturalist and avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, hunting, and quiet tramping through the woods. Following retirement, after 35 years at M.I.T./Lincoln Laboratory, and an earlier career at MITRE, he and Mina lived in Casco.

He loved golfing, and celebrated his first hole-in-one at Paris Hill Country Club in 1997. Listening to jazz was a life long passion, and dancing an earlier one. Light of feet and tall of stature, his quick wit and sound delivery of jokes kept all of us laughing. He embraced his life, family, and many friends, never shirking from assisting all in times of need.

Enjoying laughter was a way of life. A Mason and Korean War, United States Air Force veteran, he served his country and community.

He leaves his wife, Mina; and children, Carrie and husband, Joseph Robinson II, of Paris, Nancy and husband, Jim Stobie, of Westford, Mass., Ruth E. Swanton and husband, David Harding, of New Haven, Conn., Charles Swanton and wife, Deborah Uotila, of Fairbanks, Alaska., and Carl B. III and wife, Paula Swanton, of Otisfield; grandchildren, John Carl Robinson and wife, Natalia Alexandra, of Raymond, Merilee Robinson and husband, Michael Grubb, of Fredericksburg, Va., Megan and Lindsey Stobie, Gus and Owen Swanton, and Katie Harding; great-grandchildren, John Joseph Grubb, and Juliana Bailey Robinson; a sister Alma and husband, Hal Husbands, of Del.; and a brother Dr. Joseph Swanton of Va; cousins, nieces and nephews. We thank the staff of M1 at Central Maine Medical Center for taking such good care of Bart, especially Dr.’s Boedeker, Williams and Miller, as well as the nursing staff for insuring peaceful passing.

He was predeceased by his parents, Mildred and Carl B. Swanton Sr., and a beloved sister Betty Hubbard.
