HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – Clearing snow from last weekend’s blizzard cost state government $2.5 million, Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s office said Tuesday.
While Rell did not declare a state of emergency because of the blizzard, she will seek federal assistance for cleanup costs.
After 10 snowstorms so far this season, $16 million of the state’s $24 million snow budget has been depleted, said Dennis Schain, a spokesman for the governor.
“Since it’s early January and I am confident we have not seen the last of Old Man Winter, I think we can safely assume we will have to cope with several more storms before the season ends,” Rell said.
Rell has written to the mayors and first selectmen of state municipalities asking for updates on the balances of their snow removal budgets by Wednesday afternoon. The information will be used to make the case for federal aid, Rell said.
The storm dumped up to 19 inches of snow in some parts of the state, and was blamed for three deaths. Two people died from shoveling snow, while an 87-year-old Watertown woman apparently wandered outside and was later found in a snowbank, according to broadcast reports.
