ORONO – Destination ImagiNation, a creative problem-solving program that has engaged more than 10,000 kindergarten through grade 12 children in Maine, will hold regional tournaments in March.

Schools and community groups from Arundel to Aroostook send teams to the four regional celebrations, and those who progress to the state celebration, which utilizes 20 buildings at the University of Maine in Orono, vie for a spot at the global celebration in Knoxville, Tenn.

Every team participates in Central Challenge and an Instant Challenge. Teams develop their Central Challenge solution over several months. Without any adult help, each team must design and create all of the props, costumes and other artistic and/or technical elements needed to bring their challenge solution to life. The culmination of their efforts will be presented in a live performance at one of the regional tournaments in March.

The tournaments will be held as follows:

South Central Maine, March 5, at Brunswick High School.

Western Maine, March 5, at Edward Little High School, Auburn.

North Central Maine, March 12, at Husson College, Bangor.

Downeast Maine, March 19, at Rockland Middle School.

This year the challenges involve building a vehicle in which at least one of the students drives around a course or building a bridge out of wood and fishing line to hold the most weight.

Other challenges involve creating a performance reminiscent of an old-time radio show with a news bulletin and commercials or a wacky inventor who goes awry. Improvisational performances are also featured at Destination ImagiNation.
