AUGUSTA – Clayton “Stub” R. Voter, 73, of Phillips, went to be with the Lord Jan. 25, at the Togus Veterans Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Phillips, July 8, 1931, the son of Maxwell and Blanche (Fairbanks) Voter. He attended Phillips High, graduating in 1952.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952, and fought in the Korean War. He married Dorothy L. Torsey in Strong on Dec. 3, 1960. He was employed at the Heel Mill and the Shank Mill in Phillips, until they closed, upon which he went to work for G.H. Bass for 27 years.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends, and will be remembered for his big wave to all he met on the road, and most of all his love for sports, especially baseball, being known as Phillips’ biggest Red Sox fan. Even though his health had been declining he got to see the Red Sox win the World Series. His love of baseball was with local teams also; he was their number one umpire. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of 44 years whom he loved dearly; his mother, Blanche of Phillips; a daughter, Susan Shaw of Phillips; a son, Paul Gardiner and his wife, Barbara, of Avon; seven grandchildren, Michael Paul, Laurie Savageau, Robert Gardiner, Kathy Butterfield, Scott Shaw, Bruce Ladd, and Bryant Loftus; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Stan Voter of Jay.

He is predeceased by his father, Maxwell, in 1966; and his best friend, Tuffy.
