PORTLAND – Arthur H. Whitten, 69, of Dixfield and formerly of Andover, died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 27, at Maine Medical Center.

He was born June 16, 1935, in Andover, the son of Arthur and Flora Morton Whitten.

He married Olive Howard on Oct. 23, 1953, and they celebrated their golden anniversary last fall with family and friends.

“Art” served in the Air Force for 21 years, retiring at the rank of master sergeant in 1974. He was then employed by M.S.A.D. 44 for 23 years.

He was a volunteer fireman and EMT for the Andover Fire Department for many years.

He is survived by his wife; his son, Howard and his wife, Judy, of Sidney; five daughters, Bobbianne MacDonald of Pittston, Wanda and her husband, Pete Coolidge, of Andover, Lynn Whitten of Dixfield, Kim and her husband, Alan Stinson, of Conyers, Ga., and Carolyn and her husband, Rick Mills, of Andover; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and cousins, Susana Targonski, Albert Sargent, and Aida Arnhold.
