Penalties not only disrupted but also defeated the Lewiston Maineiacs on Saturday.

Two Chicoutimi power-play goals in the second period broke open a 1-1 tie and gave the Sagueneens a 3-1 victory over Lewiston.

Maxime Boisclair scored both goals in the second period to lift the division-leading Sagueneens to the win. Chicoutimi had 10 power plays to Lewiston’s four. The Maineiacs earned 42 minutes in penalties to Chicoutimi’s 29.

Lewiston coach Clement Jodoin was still fuming with the officiating and the fact that the Maineiacs were in a constant state of killing penalties.

“The refereeing was horrible,” said Jodoin. “Usually I’m not a complainer.

“You’ve got to play the game, but I didn’t like it at all. I was definitely angry. I’m still mad.”

Coming off a strong four-goal opening period against Baie-Comeau in Friday’s 4-2 win, Lewiston took the early lead with a power play goal from Jonathan Paiement at 12:46. It was Paiement’s seventh of the year. That lead didn’t last long, however. Chicoutimi tied it 16 seconds later when Justin Belanger scored his 10th of the season. Belanger also had two assists in the game.

Amid a penalty-filled second period, Chicoutimi scored twice. Boisclair scored just 4:05 into the period to break the tie. He added his 34th of the year with 11 seconds left in the period.

“That third one really hurt us,” said Jodoin.

Chicoutimi outshot Lewiston 47-26 in the game. Jonathan Bernier (5-9-3) had 44 saves.

“He had a great game, a strong game,” said Jodoin. “I have to give him credit for his performance. He really kept us in the game.”

Former Maineiac netminder Brandon Verge (13-8-2) earned the win, making 25 saves.

“We didn’t test him like we would have like to,” said Jodoin.

Lewiston outshot Chicoutimi 11-9 in the first period but were outgunned 18-7 and 20-8 in the final two periods, respectively.
