Dear Sun Spots: The Senior Companion Program is looking for several caring people who want to make a difference in the lives of homebound elderly.
If you are 60 years of age or over and on a fixed income, you may be eligible to become a senior companion. We especially need companions in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Please call (800) 287-1482 for more information.
Our program is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and is partnered with Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
Senior companions provide friendly visiting to combat loneliness and isolation to clients of Androscoggin Home Care and receive a tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits. Thank you for caring. – Anna Saar, Senior Companion Program Aide, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Our daughter who is already mom of two, a 6-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, is expecting twin girls in February. We are looking for the following: any baby-girl clothes or furniture, any twin items, anything that may help her with her twins. Suggestions are welcomed! Thanks. I can be reached at (207) 225-2154. – No Name, Turner.
Dear Sun Spots: I read in an article that there is a lady in Maine who fixes up used dolls to give to needy children. Could you post her address for me? I have several dolls and stuffed animals to offer her. They are in very good condition. – No Name, Turner.
Answer: Unfortunately, Sun Spots is not aware of this woman. Perhaps other readers familiar with her work will be willing to contact the column with more information.
Dear Sun Spots: The Women’s Club of Greene would like to express sincere appreciation for the continued support of businesses, churches, civic organizations and individuals for their annual Christmas program for less-privileged seniors and children in their area. The program was a huge success again in 2004.
We have another request. Some very caring ladies in our community are willing to make quilts for those in need. They request 100 percent cotton material and thread so that they can work on these wonderfully warm quilts throughout the year. If you have these items and are willing to donate them to this worthy cause, please call 946-5750. Thank you. – Brenda Theriault, Greene.
Dear Sun Spots: Thank you! I really appreciate your answer to my request for a way to get sympathy cards to those two soldiers’ families. I belong to a group online that is called The Angels of Hope. We send angels and butterflies to people who need hope, encouragement, sympathy, etc., and especially like to honor our fallen soldiers. This is a big help for me to send to the lady who takes care of that particular request area. I had done research at several different sites and gotten nowhere. Now I will know where I can go for this type of information again, if needed. God bless you. – No Name, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin has a large waiting list, and is in need of patient, caring adults who will serve as one-on-one tutors. Eighteen percent of all adults in Androscoggin County struggle with a third-grade reading level, and the demand for our service continues to grow. In particular, we have many English speakers of other languages and basic literacy students who need to upgrade their basic reading and writing skills. Our next tutor-training workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please call Literacy Volunteers at 753-1772. Thank you for help! – Tahlia Hope, executive director, No Town.
