CHICAGO (AP) – U.S. Senators Dick Durbin and Barack Obama have asked Congress and the Transportation Security Administration to investigate the easy availability of commercial airline pilot uniforms online.

The Illinois Democrats said in a letter to Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., that an investigation by CLTV in Chicago found it was easy to get uniforms on the Internet without providing proof that the consumer worked for an airline.

Durbin and Obama said on Tuesday that immediate action was needed to close a potentially deadly loophole in the homeland security system.

“Such a stunt, were it pulled by an enemy of the United States, could have led to devastating consequences,” the senators wrote.

Collins and Lieberman are the chair and ranking members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. The senators also wrote to Adm. David M. Stone, the assistant Homeland Security secretary who heads the TSA.
