PORTLAND – Thomas H. Burgess, 76, formerly of Rumford Center, and a five-year resident of the Portland area, died Friday, Feb. 4, at Mercy Hospital, with his family at his side.

Born on Feb. 28, 1928, son of the late Merle F. and Florence (Akers) Burgess of Rumford Center, he was a graduate of Rumford High School and also attended MCI and Kent’s Hill preparatory schools, and later Bentley College in Waltham, Mass., and the University of Maine at Orono.

He served with the United States Army Infantry as a sergeant during the Korean War, and for more than 30 years he worked as a civil engineering technician for the Maine State Department of Transportation in the Dixfield office. An accomplished athlete and avid outdoorsman, he was an AMC hut master on Mount Washington, and for many years participated in search and rescue missions there.

He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia B. Anderson of Lexington, Mass., and Jill Burgess of Scarborough; and four grandchildren.
