LEWISTON – Bates College is No. 1.

The Bobcats women’s basketball team sits atop the D3hoops.com national poll, which was released Tuesday.

Fourth a week ago, Bates (20-1) knocked off then No. 1 Bowdoin 74-62 last Tuesday to avenge its lone loss of the season and climb into the top spot for what is believed to be the first time in school history.

Bates received 10 of the 23 first-place votes for 579 points, seven better than No. 2 Scranton (19-1), which earned nine first-place votes. Bowdoin (18-2) slipped two notches to No. 3, while USM (18-2) dropped to fourth despite winning both games last week. Bowdoin and USM split the remaining four first-place votes.

The competing USA Today/ESPN coaches poll has Bates ranked second, four points behind No. 1 Scranton. That poll ranks Bowdoin third and USM eighth.

The Bobcats finish the regular season on the road this weekend at Amherst and Trinity.
