LEWISTON – Now is the time for farmers to apply for operating or ownership loans.

Applying early is important so loans can be processed and funded in a timely fashion, according to farm loan manager Michael Dennison, who works at the federal Farm Service Agency in Lewiston.

“If you are having trouble getting the credit you need for your farm, or regularly borrow from FSA, direct and guaranteed loans are available now,” he said in a prepared statement. Dennison also suggested that prospective borrowers ask lenders about FSA loan guarantees if they have had a setback and the lender is reluctant to extend or renew a loan.

He said most FSA loan programs have special funding available for minority, female and beginning farmers.

FSA employees are available to help with applications and other forms, he said. For further information, people can contact the FSA office at 254 Goddard Road or call 753-9400.
