FARMINGTON – Gwendolyn Hutchins Norton, 90, of Kingfield, died on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at Edgewood Manor in Farmington, from leukemia.

She was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Kingfield, to Oliver B. and Ethel I. (Cushman) Hutchins. She graduated from Kingfield High School in 1931, and received her teaching certificate from Farmington Normal School in 1933.

She married Frank M. Norton of North Anson, on Sept. 20, 1934, and they were together for 57 years, until his death on June 30, 1991. They lived in Kingfield all their lives, except from 1967 to 1972, when they lived in New Jersey.

She substitute taught in the Kingfield School system, as well as in several New Jersey communities. She also worked as a waitress at the Hotel Herbert and Deer Farm Camps.

She was a longtime member and past noble grand of the Carrabassett Rebekah Lodge 123, and a member and past president of the Sterling Past Noble Grands Club of Kingfield. She was also a member of the Kingfield Homemakers, and the Kingtown Literary Club. She was named Mrs. Kingfield in 1990.

In her youth, she joined the of the First Baptist Church of Kingfield where she played the organ for services. While living the past two months at Edgewood Manor, she often played the piano for the residents. A lover of music, she sang in many church choirs and participated in the Farmington Community Chorus for many years. She was a member of the Farmington Senior Citizens Kitchen Band, and enjoyed all the engagements that they played at: parades, nursing homes, and the Farmington Fair.

She loved to read to children, and was a volunteer in the schools. Recently, she received a Points of Light Presidential Service award for five years as a HealthReach RSVP volunteer. She was a member of the Kingfield Senior Citizens, and frequently attended the Phillips Seniors meetings, where she would play the piano. She was also a member of the Ruth Heald Cragin Chapter of the DAR. She enjoyed doing puzzles, and playing all kinds of card games.

Survivors include her son, Clifford M. Norton, his wife, Evie, of Kingfield; two daughters, Patricia Durham of Farmington, and Sandra Kwiatkowski and her husband, Mark, of Plainfield, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Clifford Merry Norton Jr., of Machiasport, Tammy Goldfrank, Timothy Norton, and Thomas Norton of Kingfield; Kelly Moorehead of Dennis, Mass.; Terry Blanchard of Biddeford, Dixon Griffin of Cameron, N.C.; and Jocelyn Kwiatkowski of Plainfield, N.J.; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Melvin Hutchins; her sister, Hermione Deshone; an infant grandson, Mark Anthony Norton; and a son-in law, John A. Durham Jr.
