FREEPORT – Lois Smith Hawken, 82, formerly of 1 Appletree Dr., Brunswick, died Monday, Feb. 7, at the Hawthorne House in Freeport.

She was born in St. Louis, Mo., March 25, 1922, a daughter of Elmer C. and Jane Gillette Smith. She attended the University of Illinois, and Washington University in St. Louis.

On Feb. 14, 1946, she married Donald M.G. Hawken. Together they had three children. They raised their family in Maryland, later moving to northern New Jersey, and eventually retiring to Maine to be closer to family.

She was a devoted and loving, wife and mother. She enjoyed countless activities including tennis, golf, bridge, sewing, and knitting. She also loved anything having to do with nature and animals. She was very active in the community, volunteering at her church, local hospitals, and the Bowdoin College Museum. The thing that brought her greatest pleasure was time spent with family and friends.

Survivors include two sons, Donald M.G. Hawken Jr., and his wife, Patty, of West Branch, Nova Scotia, and Daniel Smith Hawken of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Sarah Jane Bernard and her husband, Barry, of Freeport; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband; and a brother, E. Charles Smith.
