It appears that a lot of people don’t support Sunday hunting. I would guess that the majority of them don’t own land on which to hunt. I own 72 acres of wildland on which people are able to snowmobile, cross country ski, snowshoe, use their ATVs, jog and walk their dog, as well as hunt and cross it to get to the Androscoggin River to fish.

I pay about $1,100 in taxes each year, and I can only hunt one day a week if lucky enough to get Saturday off. Others can use the land every day.

Hunting is one of the safest sports in Maine. Our new year isn’t 2 months old, and there have already been five snowmobile fatalities. How many ATV deaths and boating fatalities were there in 2004?

I am surprised at how many groups in the state are against Sunday hunting. I belong to several and will continue to support them, even though they don’t support me. And I will continue to pay large hunting, fishing and permit fees to keep Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife above water, even though the King administration and Legislature passed a law three years ago to pay 18 percent of their budget from the general fund and have had it taken away.

If Sunday hunting doesn’t pass, I don’t want people calling me wondering why the signs on my property have gone from “Access by Permission Only,” to “No Trespassing.”
