PORTLAND – The Maine Mineralogical and Geological Society will hold its 22nd annual Gem and Mineral Show Saturday, March 12, and Sunday, March 13.

Each year, the gem society invites retail dealers who present diverse jewelry, cut gems, rough stone, a multitude of fossils and mineral specimens of every imaginable kind. One of the society’s primary goals is to interest the community, especially children, in minerals and geology.

To do this, the show will offer children a mini-mine, a mineral wheel of fortune, a hands-on mineral exhibit and coloring area as well as a silent auction, which moves hundreds of specimens intriguing both adults and kids.

The show also will feature a fluorescent mineral display a gold panning exhibit and other attractions to introduce people to the world of minerals. All attending qualify for hourly door prizes and the grand prize drawing on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The show will run both days from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Finley Gym, University of New England, 716 Stevens Ave.

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and teens under 18, and free for children 12 and under. For directions or more information, people can contact Roberta Goldsmith, the show’s chair, at merockhound@xpressamerica.net or (207) 459-7986.
