I read with sadness that former Sen. William Cohen is selling his services to Florida to help protect their naval bases, perhaps in competition with Maine’s bases.

I am surprised that so many view this as an issue of state loyalty. It is actually one of ethics.

Sen. Cohen received a good salary for his services, but his retirement pay is modest, at least for the circles he moves in. Considering his skills and relatively young age, he is free to sell his expertise and experience to the highest bidder, as a consultant. However, his influence – or perceived influence – to affect existing legislation or current policy through government contacts should never be for sale.

I write not to single out one of our better senators, but to say that this practice remains wrong, no matter how legal it is or how common it becomes.

It would be just as wrong if he took Maine’s money for the same purpose.
