NEWRY – Mountain Valley packed four skiers among the top 12 finishers in the boys’ giant slalom to take a commanding lead in the Class B Alpine boys’ championships Monday at Sunday River.

Corey Moore and Chris Lever placed fifth and eighth in the two-run giant slalom to lead the Falcons to a 36-61 cushion over runner-up Maranacook. Matt Papsadora posted the 11th fastest time, followed by Joseph Arsenault (12th), Tristan LaPointe (20th) and Ian Miller (29th).

Jon Lobozzo of Gray-New Gloucester easily captured the individual honors, finishing 1.62 seconds ahead of Mitch Riley of Maranacook. Lobozzo was beaten on his second run by teammate Eric Trinward, who recovered nicely to place sixth overall after posting just the 19th fastest time on the first run.

Amy Dyer of Fryeburg (1:43.36) narrowly edged Katie Van Riper of Mt. Abram to win the gold medal in the girls’ giant slalom.

Dyer’s nipped Van Riper in both runs to post a 1:43.36 compared to 1:43.74 for the Roadrunners skier.

Amy Gifford of Maranacook was a distant third, more than four seconds behind the top two.

Maranacook won team honors with a 41-47 victory over Yarmouth. Fryeburg (68), Falmouth (69) and Mt. Abram (70) rounded out the top five.
