V. S. Darling of Auburn who came to Auburn from Bowdoin, and after working for five years in the shoe-shop opened a store at 15 Court Street, where he was located for about one year before he went into his present quarters on Court Street three years ago, has made extensive improvements in his store. An entire new front has been put in. The two large plate glass windows are boxed in with panels of wood and crystal glass and the store has been repainted and finished throughout. Three arc lights have been added to the store and electric lights with glass reflectors have been placed in the windows.

50 Years Ago, 1955

The air raid test in Androscoggin County once again demonstrated the need for more effective warning signals in the Twin Cities, as large sections of each city failed to hear the signals, according to Civil Defense heads. Lewiston Director Irving Friedman reported the Lewiston system is of “little value” as it provides no warning to large numbers of residents. Friedman termed it “neither efficient nor adequate.”

25 Years Ago, 1980

You can see a milestone in today’s Lewiston Journal magazine. It’s on Page 3A in full color. That’s really what it is – a three-color picture and the first ever printed in a Sun-Journal newspaper. And the Journal goes back some 119 years as a daily publication. Sun-Journal Production Manager Bert Mason says this will give readers an idea of what our Goss Urbanite offset press can do. “We learned a lot from this effort,” he adds, “The next attempt should come out much better.” “An ability to publish full-color pictures was one of the many benefits of purchasing this new press,” explains Russell H. Costello, Sun-Journal publisher. He spent part of the morning in the pressroom watching Mason and his crew lining up the three plates (one for each color) that printed the picture.
