The Sun Journal is to be commended for paying thoughtful attention to the Androscoggin River over the last year. By covering the issue as seriously as it has, the Sun Journal has shown an understanding that the Androscoggin is a resource that binds the valley’s communities in myriad ways.

That’s why I was saddened to see the banner headline “Dividing waters” over the Feb. 13 guest columns about the river.

Opinions are certainly divided over what should be done to and for the river. But I believe the concern that everyone – millworker, environmentalist, business owner, canoeist – is showing these days actually demonstrates how central the river is to the identity of those in its watershed.

How to use and simultaneously honor the river is an issue that can unite all of us, ultimately, in a common and prosperous future.
