In an article in the Sun Journal Feb. 18, River Valley edition, the reporter wrote that the selectmen and I expressed disgust about some snowmobilers being on and around our water reservoir. What I asked was that they (the snowmobilers, four-wheelers, etc.) please refrain from riding on the reservoir itself. It was a simple, prudent and, I thought, polite request.

Selectman Raymond Carlton said at the same meeting that there were no snowmobile tracks on the reservoir the day before the Blessing of the Sleds because he had been out grooming the trails, which pass close by the reservoir.

No one, to my knowledge, said that it looked like the Blessing of the Sleds was held at the reservoir. I have great respect for 99 percent of the snowmobilers in this area. They make every effort to respect peoples’ property and the laws governing snowmobile operations.

This is Maine, after all, and snowmobiling and four-wheeling are an integral part of our overall economy. I am absolutely certain that safe snowmobiling and safe drinking water are not mutually exclusive.
