PORTLAND – Northern New England’s flower show, its largest indoor event, will return to the Portland waterfront in March.

The Maine Landscape & Nursery Association said the annual spring flower and garden show will be held at the Portland Company Complex on Fore Street from March 10 to 13, with a gala opening on March 9. The event will be renamed The Portland Flower Show, with the theme of “The Place I Call Home.”

“We feel as if the flower show has come home,” said Phineas Sprague, the owner of the Portland Company Complex that hosted southern Maine’s flower and garden show from 1997 to 2002. For the past two years, the show has been under a tent at Scarborough Downs.

In the past two years, the Maine-based gardening magazine known as People, Places & Plants produced the flower show under a tent at Scarborough Downs. When the magazine announced in June that it would not produce a show in 2005, it set the wheels in motion back toward Portland.

“We’re happy and relieved that Portland Yacht Services and the city of Portland have welcomed us back,” said Scarborough landscaper Steve Card, the president of the Maine Landscape & Nursery Association. “We’re confident that this new show will continue to build on the tradition of garden shows in which our organization has partnered since 1988.”

Tickets will be $15, with discounts for afternoon hours. Tickets will be sold as most Hannaford Bros. Stores. The show will begin at 10 a.m. each day, ending at 6 p.m. on Thursday, 9 on Friday, 8 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. A charity auction of plants and other items will be held at the conclusion of the show Sunday.

Organizers expect about 20,000 people to attend the four-day celebration of local horticulture, featuring educational seminars, landscaped exhibits, floral arrangements and a Children’s Discovery area.
