AUBURN – Robert F. Griffin, 88, a resident of 210 Park Ave., Auburn, died Monday morning, Feb. 28, at Clover Manor, as a result of injuries received from an auto accident.

He was born in Lewiston, May 7, 1916, the son of Charles and Sylvia ( York) Griffin. He attended Lewiston schools and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1935.

He had worked as a foreman for Bates Manufacturing for more than 40 years. During World War II, he served in the US Coast Guard in the Atlantic theater from 1942 to 1945. From 1949 to 1965, both Mr. Griffin and his wife ran a flag bunting and Christmas decoration business where they were known through out Maine communities for their decorating skill. He was a member of the Lewiston and State Horseshoe Pitchers Association for more than 35 years. He won many trophies during that time. He was also a substitute mail carrier, worked with young children in the Auburn PAL and for many of his retired years carried a newspaper route.

He attended the Auburn Church of Christ Scientist. He enjoyed walking, and participated in many walk-a-thons for many different charitable organizations. He loved wildlife, animals, feeding birds and donating to the animal shelter. He was a good neighbor and spent many hours donating his time and efforts.

Survivors include his wife, the former Louise Mayo, whom he married August 14, 1942, of Auburn; two daughters, Roberta Collins and her husband, Paul, of Readfield, and Roxana Snowdale of Davie, Fla.; 6 grandsons, Brian and John Moore, Peter, Kyle, and Jared Griffin as well as Richard Snowdale. Also surviving are 3 great-grandchildren, Hannah Moore and Spencer and Myah Griffin.

Mr. Griffin was predeceased by one brother, George Griffin, who was killed in action in 1943, on the Island of Moratai in the Pacific theater during World War II.
