BOSTON (AP) – The old adage “You can’t get there from here,” may still apply in Massachusetts, but at least now you’ll know why.

The state Executive Office of Transportation will roll out a new Web site on Tuesday that will show where road and bridge work is ongoing, and how long it is expected to last.

The result will be that nagging questions – such as how long that bridge will be impassable and why there’s a jackhammer rattling the window panes – can be answered with the click of a mouse, said Transportation Secretary Daniel A. Grabauskas.

“Every day, we get hundreds of phone calls on everything from constructions companies, to citizens, to the media, to local officials calling about projects,” Grabauskas said.

“I think this is a much more comprehensive and more convenient way of checking on the status of projects.”

Not only will the Web site show what kind of work is underway, it will show when the project started, when it’s scheduled to be finished, and how much it will cost.

The project database is part of a newly revamped transportation Web site. The updated site includes links to every facet of transportation in the state, from bike paths to bus schedules to boat schedules.
