AUBURN – The jury assigned to the Sarah Allen trial got Tuesday off.
Heavy snow and winds closed courthouses across the state, including Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn, where the Lisbon mother has been on trial for the past two weeks.
The trial is scheduled to continue Wednesday with closing arguments from both sides. The case will then be handed to the jurors.
Allen, 31, faces a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of her 21-month-old adopted son. The state alleges that she shook the boy to death on Feb. 14, 2003. Allen’s defense team has argued that the toddler died as the result of a pre-existing, undetected brain disorder.
In order to convict the Lisbon woman of manslaughter, the jurors must reach a unanimous decision. In June, Allen’s first trial ended without a verdict because the 12 jurors could not agree.
If convicted, the former hair stylist could face up to 40 years in prison.
