A large quantity of snow in Franklin and Somerset Counties. In many places in these counties on the main traveled roads one will go for some little distance through deep cuts with the snow six and eight feet high each side of the road, and for long distances the snow is level with the tops of high fences. One should see the large quantities of pulp wood yarded out by the sides of the streams this spring to be taken into the rivers. It surely looks like a lumbering country. Gas consumes in Lewiston and Auburn were agreeably surprised yesterday to receive with their gas bills notice of reduction in price of gas from $1.70 to $150 per thousand feet.

50 Years Ago, 1955

Poultry men and town officials had a verbal collision today over a bill exempting from taxation chickens less than four months old. Such an exemption would principally Maine’s big broiler industry. Joseph B. Campbell, attorney for Assn., took a stand that broilers under four months have no market value. Hence, he argued, for tax purposes they should be classed with growing crops which aren’t taxed until they’re sent to market.

25 Years Ago, 1980

To many people in Lewiston-Auburn, the Lions Club building at Young’s Corner in Auburn has been a landmark of sorts for many years. The building, constructed in the late 1800s, might not be noted for its architectural design but has served well as an auction hall, catering businesses and a center for many activities the Lions Club sponsored. More recently, curious passers-by have noticed renovations underway as the structure received new clapboard and fresh paint. According to Lewiston police records, while the number of shoplifting cases rose about 2.4 percent last year, the value of the goods stolen increased by 133 percent. And that includes only the number of cases that were reported to the police.
